Provide a concise synopsis of an event to share with the media and the public.

Check with your unit to ensure there are no local templates that should be used instead.

Write a news release after an event has occurred. Use this template to write a concise news release that includes:

  • a lead with the 5Ws.
  • a bridge.
  • a body with quotations.
  • an optional boilerplate statement.
  • contact information.

Note: depending on the urgency of the situation and the type of event, the news release may not require all of these parts.

Distributing Your News Release

Convert into a PDF and distribute news release via email or direct the media to a link on your organization's website that hosts a digital copy of your media kit and/or news releases. Make sure all information is reviewed and approved by leadership and released by persons with release authority to speak to the media.
