How to Create a Title and Black Video Slate

How To 5 min
The black screens in a video act like curtains in a show. The curtain opens to reveal a scene and the actors appear on stage. The curtain closes to indicate the end of the scene or show. Similarly, black screens allow the video to breathe rather than start or end abruptly.

This video follows the steps below to demonstrate how to finalize your video projects with a five-second title graphic followed by two seconds of black video at the beginning. Also included is how to create five seconds of black video at the end of your runtime.

To create bookends, follow these steps:

  1. Drop your video footage on your Timeline.
  2. Click within the Timeline panel. Press Home on your keyboard to park the playhead at the start of the video.
  3. Select Graphics > New Layer > Text. A text box appears in the program monitor, and a new text layer appears in the Timeline.
  4. Use the Selection tool [V] to move the text box to the upper-left corner within inner safe margins.
Note: If safe margins are not visible in the program monitor, right-click within the program monitor, and select Safe Margins.
  5. Switch to the Type tool [T]. Click inside the box and select all [Ctrl + A].
  6. Fill in the box as follows. Press [Enter] after each line.
    1. Your rank and name (first and last, e.g., Sgt. John Doe).
    2. Visual Information Record Identification Number (e.g., 200101-O-ZZ999-1001).
    3. Product title (appropriately name the product/story based on its content, e.g., Video Documentation Demo).
  7. Press Enter after each line.
  8. Switch to the Selection tool [V]. Right-click on the text layer in the Timeline, and then select Speed/Duration.
